Overview
At Bespoke Metrics, I was the Lead UX/UI Designer responsible for improving a platform used by subcontractors to submit their information and get prequalified by contractors before bidding on construction projects. Because the construction industry has historically relied on manual workflows and inconsistent processes, this platform aimed to introduce structure, clarity and efficiency into an area where very little standardization existed.

The Problem
Before the platform existed, subcontractor pre-qualification was handled through scattered PDFs, emails, spreadsheets and ad-hoc forms created by individual contractors. Nothing was unified. Every contractor asked for information differently, subcontractors had to repeat the same details over and over, and risk assessment was based on inconsistent or incomplete inputs. The lack of standardization created delays, errors and friction for everyone involved. Subcontractors struggled to complete the process, and contractors lacked reliable data to assess risk confidently.
My Approach
Leading design end-to-end meant balancing industry complexity with simplicity for real users. My process included: User Understanding & Alignment • Created various personas to understand different scenarios. • Mapped out stakeholder relationships to include different players in the industry. Research & Discovery • Conducted interviews with both subcontractors and contractors to understand their workflows, blockers, and their barriers to digital adoption. • Combed existing documents to map the “true” current-state process. Design Exploration • Built multiple iterative prototypes, each tested with actual users in live scenarios (filling out forms, uploading documentation, reviewing risk summaries). • Evaluated different models for how subcontractors perceive “risk scoring” and how contractors make award decisions. Cross-functional Collaboration • Worked closely with the Product Owner to shape requirements, scope MVP, and prioritize phased delivery. • Partnered with front-end and back-end engineers to identify technical constraints around data and translated complex logic into clear, actionable UI patterns. Validation • Ran usability tests on each major flow including onboarding, multi-step forms, document upload, contractor review. • Ensured the final experience worked for both digitally fluent users and construction professionals who barely tolerate tech.
The Solution and Impact
The final platform unified the entire pre-qualification lifecycle: For Subcontractors • A guided, multi-step submission flow reducing confusion and abandonment. • Smart forms that surface only relevant fields based on trade type and company size. • Reusable profiles so subs don’t start from scratch for each bid. For Contractors • A centralized dashboard with risk scoring, financial health indicators, safety performance, and submission status. • Standardized evaluation criteria to replace subjective decision-making. • Quick comparison tools to filter subs based on risk tolerance and project needs. Key Outcomes • Reduced manual data entry and email back-and-forth. • Standardized risk assessment across teams. • Considerably faster prequalification cycles. • Improved transparency and trust between subcontractors and contractors.
